A Sustainable You

Practical tips and strategies to keep well and resilient
when responding to community needs after a disaster.

STAROS is pleased to bring Tricia Hendry back to the Hawkes Bay to deliver this workshop that will bring together helpers and volunteers who responded to support vulnerable others in our community during and after Cyclone Gabrielle. It will be an opportunity to meet others who have experienced similar challenges and experiences.  It will provide time to meet, reflect, discuss, share experiences, and consider ways to support our own mental health and resilience after all we have witnessed and experienced.

§  What sustainability can look like for helpers in the face of a disaster

§  What motivates helpers like us to respond and assist others

§  The difference help makes and examples of this that we’ve witnessed

§  Challenges helpers often have to deal with during a disaster, and afterwards

§  Common reactions helpers can experience as they work in circumstances of trauma, grief, and stress – their impact, including possible delayed or ongoing reactions

§  What’s helped us most? Sharing the positive ways we have personally used to get through this time.

§  Effective self-care tools helpers can always keep handy

§  Red flags to look out for and help and support options available to us

§  Why helpers often find asking for help themselves so difficult

§  Where hope fits into being sustainable and replenishing your hope bucket

§  What have we learned about ourselves through this time?

§  Maximising the bond we share as a network of people who ‘get it’ – some ideas

§  Moving forward sustainably with strength and insights.

After Tricia local organisations will let you know what support options are available to you and how you can access this support. There will be time to ask questions and an opportunity to connect with your community.
